HACKENSACK, NEW JERSEY – JP247: From Pre-Med to a Practicing Physician

Non-Global Course: While not considered a ‘global experience,’ some courses take place off-campus! The following course will be offered Jan Plan ’24.

What does it take to get into med school, attend and then practice medicine with a focus on community medicine and social determinants of health?

This January Plan course is an off campus program offered in conjunction with the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine in Nutley New Jersey just 15 miles west of New York City. Students will attend workshops and talks by HMSOM faculty and staff as well as members of the local area medical community. Students will answer the following questions; What does it take to get into med school, attend and then practice medicine, and why is an understanding of social determinants of health so important to all physicians to achieve the best outcomes? Students will complete a final research project and presentation exploring a particular health disparity and the social determinants of health underpinning the disparity. Students will then propose an intervention to alleviate the disparity and assess the strengths and weaknesses of their proposal. Students spend three weeks in New Jersey with the instructor from Colby and class takes place at the medical school from 9am until 3pm or 4pm in the afternoon. There are nightly homework assignments as well as the final project. The final week of the Jan Plan is spent back on campus to work on some of the networking skills covered during their time in New Jersey. You must interview with the Colby instructor in order to enroll in this course. Preference will be given to students who are first generation college and/or low income students. We are also seeking to enroll students who would otherwise not have access to this kind of experience through their own family and professional networks
