GLOBAL INNOVATION COURSE JAN PLAN 2025: This course unpacks Jewish life in, migration from, and memory of Morocco by exploring both the history of vibrant Jewish life there and the way in which it is remembered following the mass migration of Moroccan Jews to Israel in the 1950s. This course includes 16 days of study abroad in Morocco to learn about the Moroccan Jewish community. Morocco’s Jewish community stood at roughly 1⁄4 million people in the 1940s and has since dwindled to 2,500 following mass Moroccan Jewish migration to Israel/Palestine. During our 16 days, students will study the historical Jewish community in Morocco, by visiting the old Jewish quarters throughout Morocco, meeting with leaders of the remaining Jewish community, and engaging with dominant Moroccan society about how the Jewish community is remembered.
