SO346: Contemporary Chinese Society (3 Credits) in the United States

GLOBAL LAB SPRING 2025: This seminar examines contemporary Chinese society in light of globalization, emphasizing both the global influence on China and China’s impact on the world. Coupling academic and popular works, this seminar course aims to demystify contemporary Chinese society and provide students with new perspectives to better engage with a country that is reshaping the world. Primarily taking a sociological perspective, it explores pressing issues that have emerged in China’s engagement with the world since the post-1978 economic reform and opening-up: urbanization, migration, ethnic conflicts, civil society, religious freedom, gender inequality, environment crisis, social media and digital platforms, among others.
