UNITED KINGDOM – BC197: Potions, Poisons, and Perfumes: Medicinal Plants of Great Britain

GLOBAL LAB JAN PLAN 2025: Embark on a transformative journey in Britain to uncover the interplay between humans and medicinal plants, with hands-on learning meeting the wisdom of ancient traditions. After two weeks in Maine, in which students will be participate in botanical and biochemical training, we will visit botanical gardens in England and Scotland. Our major sites will be Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (London) and the Royal Botanical Garden of Edinburgh. Kew Gardens has been a worldwide hub for economic botany beginning in the late 1700’s, as colonial expeditions procured live and preserved plant specimens from around the globe. The Royal Botanical Garden of Edinburgh was founded 1670 as a physic garden to support the physician’s college as part of the Scottish Enlightenment. Both gardens host extensive collections of dried and live specimens from around the globe in addition to scientific staff with expertise in botany, genetics, phytochemistry, and medicinal plants.
