This is a one-year internship for undergraduates who are applying to medical or other professional health schools. This program is an intensive introduction to all aspects of patient care, electronic medical records, administrative tasks and projects. This internship is most valuable to anyone taking a gap year to build their resume, take or retake the MCATs, and take additional online courses. It gives us the opportunity to see what a career in medicine would be like, witnessing firsthand the stresses and challenges our doctors encounter daily. For a few undecided reasons, it gives us the opportunity to see what a career in medicine would be like. You see firsthand the stresses and challenges our doctors encounter daily. You will be assisting any one of our seven podiatric physicians. The Intern position will also involve coordination of the journal club and other educational activities for our externs (undergraduate premed students).
This is a paid full-time position which also presents an opportunity for two certifications. Of course, this involves studying and taking certifying exams. Every intern to date has taken advantage of this opportunity. This along with duties and “experience on the job” is instrumental in building a resume geared for your application to a medical school or related field.
For anyone planning a gap year, this is also an economic windfall especially for those in the local community living at home. Figure the cost of a post-Baccalaureate (postbacc) program, room and board and living expenses. Next figure income along with cost savings if staying at home. I figure this to be at least 100,000-dollar savings. We all know the expense of a medical school education and the importance of avoiding as much debt as possible.

Accompany patients with the check-in and check-out process, help collect medical insurance information and help schedule follow up appointments.

Ability to commute to site location at 2414 Walbert Avenue, Allentown PA 18104
Relocation is necessary if not within commuting distance.
Baccalaureate degree
Other positions for part time externships while in school are available.
History
Dr Raymond Fritz is a former Marine RECON Corpsman, Navy SEAL Corpsman, Muhlenberg Graduate turned Podiatric Surgeon.
Dr Fritz also served as the residency director at the National Naval Medical Center (Now Walter Reed Medical Center) in Bethesda, Maryland.
Dr Raymond Fritz started our program in 1993 with Muhlenberg Students at the time, now Dr Lora Baker and Dr Mike Daniels who came to do a shadow month at the office.
Dr Fritz immediately saw the need for more student experience, and he created a paid externship program for student employment while attending undergraduate school here in the Lehigh Valley. Dr Baker worked part time while in school as a sophomore and continued through summers until graduation and beyond. She joined the practice after completion of her surgical residency program. Dr Baker is now the next senior doctor here at AFFC.
Since inception, all our externs and interns have gone on to successful careers in medicine. In the last eight years 100% of 20 of our employed students who applied have been accepted into medical (12), podiatric medical (4), Doctor of Physical Therapy (1) and remaining to physician assistant schools. There were countless more, but we didn’t keep track until the opening of the new office on Walbert Avenue.
Our goal is to challenge students every day.
